Produced by Mattia Coletti and Garage Records, “Gigantic” comprises eight tracks which find the band in a clear compositive state of grace and represent Rigolò’s artistic and techincal maturity. But maturity and extreme attention to sounds don’t subdue freshness and spontaneity, fundamental features of the italian band since ever. The album’s narrative line is soaked in a poetic and bright mood, expressing itself in clear folk tinges or in indie-steering pop-rock entrys, with instrumental progressions and melodic openings of great suggestion. In order to set Rigolò we could easily quote renowned names (Built to Spill, Vaselines, Snow Patrol, but also Notwist or Agnes Obel) but comparison would be reductive of the band’s great and talented personality. Lightness, in “Gigantic”, is masterly crafted tool, with Carella’s voice as soft as a whisper, a pattern book of strophes and refrains, catchy hooks (“You Run”, “In the Wake of Kites”), nuances, small rustlings, subtle sound beats and a severe harmonic-melodic structuring which evokes pop scenarios of rare bightness. And then Jenny’s cello, prominent since the opening track, “Voiceless”, where it faces Napolitano’s drums only. A cello often with a sharp nature, with a structural function (“Before it Gets Dark”), soloist, replacing the guitar, able to produce sounds that sound electronic but that are not at all. And speaking of electronics, we find it sparsely in the record, but inserted in a delicate way, at the service of acoustic. Accordingly, the live set is consistent with the record, which, starting with its title, evokes huge spaces and exalts them in a cinematic way, opening with the darkness of “Voiceless” and closing with the surrounding serendipity of “Better Soul”.
